Events OPTIONAL TOURs 2007 Turkey
has a magnificent past, and is a land full of historic treasures from
13 successive civilizations spanning 10,000 years. Situated at the gateway
between southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, it has long claimed status
as a cultural crossroads for the continents. Explore this fascinating
country with us!Cappadocia forms a rough triangle, southeast of Ankara, between Nevsehir, Kayseri and Nigde, with the town of Urgup at the centee - a fairytale landscape of volcanic rock sculpted by time and the elements into a geological dance of rock spires and needles. Cappadoccia has been inhabited continuously for at least 4,000 years. It has some 40 underground cities - some were big enough to house 30,000 people in times of danger. One of the most spectacular sights is the collection of 30 frescoed churches, over 1,000 years old, which comprise the Goreme Open Air Museum. Ephesus
is the most well-preserved classical Greco-Roman city on the
Mediterranean, and is perhaps the best place in the world to imagine how
life went-on during Roman times. According to the old legends, Ephesus
was founded by the female warriors known as the Amazons! The most important
archeologocal and historical city in Turkey, once the commercial center
of ancient world, Ephesus proudly houses one of the seven ancient wonders
of the world; the Temple of Artemis. As a strategic coastal gateway to
the Eastern World, this Ionian refuge grew to be the second largest city
in the Roman Empire.Pamukkale, or "Cotton Castle", is a series of shimmering snow-white terraced travertines, which cascade down the mountain side slopes, formed by limestone-laden hot springs. The passing of time has yielded stalactites, potholes and magical fairy-tables. The thermal water is also reputed to have healing properties. Paddling in the little pools on the plateau is possible and exhilarating. There are also other hot pools in the area, supplied by the natural springs, where you can swim among ancient column fragments scattered underwater. |
